Healthy Foods That Help to Avoid Thyroid Disease

When choosing the best products that support the function of the thyroid gland, you need to limit your intake of foods rich in goitrogens (goitrogen) in favor of food that helps the thyroid gland to avoid potential thyroid disease. It is especially foods rich in vitamin B and iron, fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, seaweed, lean meat, fish, beans, olive oil, and vegetable oil.

Foods rich in vitamin B

Foods rich in vitamin B help the thyroid gland to fight thyroid disease: turkey, beef, Brazil nuts, potatoes, lentils, black beans, and yogurt. Fresh vegetables rich in iron also support the function of the thyroid gland.

Whole grains

Whole grains also help the thyroid gland. For example, lentils, brown rice, barley, millet, popcorn, wild rice, oats, and whole wheat. People should consume marine plants, such as algae if they have thyroid problems. Thyroid problems are often caused by free radicals. On the other hand, foods rich in antioxidants protect us, i.e. the production of the thyroid hormone which is dependant for many important bodily functions. Those who want a healthy thyroid should eat fresh fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, tomatoes, cherries, courgettes, and peppers. But broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, rapeseed, kale, turnips, kohlrabi, and Brussels sprouts may have goitrogenic effect.

The potential side effects

Although these plants are healthy, in many respects, they contain certain ingredients that may well impede the function of the thyroid gland. If eaten in large quantities, these foods may even reduce the absorption of the thyroid hormone. Lean meat, fish from cold seas, flax, and beans provide useful proteins and help maintain the health of the thyroid gland. Organic foods are a particularly good choice because they do not contain certain hormones and steroids that can reduce natural production of thyroid hormones.

Omega-3 fats

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the thyroid gland. Tuna and salmon are good sources when it comes to fish caught in the sea rather than those grown in fish farms. In fact, for the fish to have omega-3 fatty acids, fish need to eat algae. Flaxseed helps the thyroid gland (grind it in a coffee grinder and put it in a yogurt, salads, and soups). In cooked dishes add it in already cooked meals, but not before it. Choosing healthy cooking oil is essential for the thyroid gland. Olive oil and canola oil are good choices. If you already have a problem with the thyroid gland before you choose any of these foods consult your family doctor or specialist.
